Business Feature: Celebrating Entrepreneurship – Swathi Mahendran

Monday 19 November 2018

Defying cultural roles and gender stereotypes, Swathi Mahendran’s courageous and innovative spirit has seen her awarded Outstanding Business Entrepreneur at the recent 2018 Albury Wodonga Business Awards.

Moving to Albury Wodonga from India only two years ago, Swathi became actively involved in the community and has gratefully received a range of support from the local community, from participating in Wodonga Council’s Youth Leadership Program (YLP) and the Alpine Valley Leadership Program to receiving invaluable mentoring from Wodonga Mayor Anna Speedie.

After identifying her business opportunity in international trade, Swathi became an export agent of chickpeas, a high demand product in India. She undertook extensive research on exporting processes, requirements and product specifications.

“Women don’t do business in my family so the idea (of starting a business) was huge for me.”

Through family connections, Swathi successfully secured a buyer in India and eventually a seller here in Australia. Her work involves communicating closely with both parties and negotiating rates for the sale of chickpeas between the buyer and seller.

A role model for aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners, Swathi surrounds herself with people who have high goals and focus on making change in the community. She is extremely grateful that the Albury Wodonga community have accepted her and provided her with so many great opportunities.
