In a unique step towards a circular economy, Goterra’s partnership with Woolworths, Veolia and AlburyCity is set to transform the processing of commercial food waste.
As we transition towards a circular economy in a bid to protect our environment and tackle climate change, innovative solutions are a key part of the puzzle.
Scheduled to commence operations this month, Goterra has established its first waste processing facility on a council waste management site, in Albury Wodonga thanks to their partnership with Woolworths, Veolia and AlburyCity.
Funded through the NSW EPA Circulate Industrial Economy Program Round 3, the program will see 1,800 tonnes of food waste diverted from landfill during the trial period and turned into a high-quality protein for animal food and soil conditioner.
The natural biological technology system is using black soldier fly larvae to convert food waste into high-value, low-impact protein and fertiliser in just 12 days.
“Food waste is responsible for 8% of global climate emissions.” – Bob Gordon, Goterra Chief Evangelist.
“When you manage organic waste with black soldier fly larvae, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 97% compared to landfill. This is a highly sustainable process that will help us genuinely tackle climate change.”
The commercial food waste processed will be from Woolworths as well as other retail, hospitality, community operators, food producers and more.
The new facility will support Albury City Council to meet its emission targets, Woolworths meet its target to send zero food waste to landfill by 2025, and help reduce our region’s carbon and ecological footprint.
This trial program addresses the requirement for commercial retail and hospitality businesses to manage their organic waste by 2025 as mandated by the NSW Governments Waste and Sustainable Materials strategy 2041.
