Inland Rail update

Inland Rail is a once-in-a-generation project to enhance supply chains and complete the backbone of the national freight network.

The Inland Rail project is a once-in-a-generation project that will enhance supply chains and complete the backbone of the national freight network by providing for a transit time of 24 hours or less for freight trains between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Inland Rail will transform the way we move freight around the country by connecting regional Australia to markets more efficiently, driving substantial cost savings for producers and consumers and delivering significant economic benefits.

The $8.4 billion project comprises 13 individual sections of track spanning more than 17,000km. Improvements to existing structures in the Melbourne to Albury section will provide increased clearances along the rail corridor. The enhancement works are required to accommodate double-stacked freight trains of 1800 metres in length.

The major users of Inland Rail will be producers across a range of sectors and freight types. These include non-bulk containerised freight such as manufactured goods, food, hardware and other packaged goods. Inland Rail is set to transform local supply chains and provide a greater option for logistical transport.

The first train is expected to operate in 2025.

Albury Wodonga is set to host the Inland Rail Conference in 2021. The event will be hosted by the Australian Logistics Council (ALC) and Australasian Railway Association (ARA) from 26 May to 27 May 2021. This is an exciting opportunity for the region and allows participants to explore multiple facets of this project. The conference will also set out actions to ensure communities, consumers, producers and freight operators receive the benefits of Inland Rail, both during the construction phase and when it is operational.
